Does Falun Gong tolerate different voices from media and public?
Date: 2008-03-21 Source: chinafxj

On November 6, 2007, CBC(Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) cancelled a disputed program about Falun Gong, which was a so-called documentary and was about to broadcast. The Chinese media of Falun Gong said nothing about this till now - which accorded with their usual reporting style of announcing good news while denying bad news. At the same time, its English media in Canada and David Kilgour, the mouthpiece of Falun Gong, insulted and abused Chinese government. Mr. David Kilgour denounced that Chinese government completely controlled domestic media and prosecute Falun Gong. However, as we know, it's the responsibility of a responsible government to strike cults. And in the battles between Chinese government and Falun Gong, it was Falun Gong who illegally pressed media, but not Chinese government.

Just take a look at how the cult-which claimed that "forbearance" as one of the three mental goals-treated with dissidents before Falun Gong was banned by Chinese government:

In June 1996, the most famous newspaper of Chinese intellectual circle "Guangming Daily" released an article "The alarm bell against pseudoscience should ring forever" to disclose Falun Gong, and then it was besieged by more than a thousand Falun Gong practitioners. Since this illegal besiegement at the time was not punished by law, it became a trend that Falun Gong took the measure of besiegement against media with different voices.

In April of 1998, the biggest evening paper of Shandong province "Qilu Wanbao" published two criticizing articles entitled respectively "Take a look at what's going on with 'Falun Gong'" and "The methods of accumulating money of 'Falun Gong' Masters". After that Falun Gong instigated more than 1500 practitioners to gather in front of the building of the newspaper and protest against them. In May 4, the medical newspaper "Health Digest Weekly" reprinted Qilu Wanbao`s article and retitled it as "The illegal and cheating 'Falun Gong'", Falun Gong once again organized more than 400 practitioners to assemble and protest in front of the newspaper since June 8.

On May 24, 1998, the program "Beijing Express"  of Beijing TV broadcasted a special report entitled "Can qualification certification clear away false Qi Gong?". The program reported a case that a student with doctor degree resulted in paralysis because of going to extremes when practicing "Falun Gong", and the program appealed to the authority and the public to reinforce management towards Qi Gong and suggested that the teachers of Qi Gong should have certifications. After broadcasting, the chief tutorship station of "Falun Gong" in Beijing organized more than 1000 "Falun Gong" practitioners to besiege Beijing TV since May 29 successively.

On July 6, 1999, "Falun Dafa bulletin" on the Internet informed that the program of exposing Falun Gong maded by Wuhan TV, Hubei province was ready to broadcast in "Light of Science" program in CCTV 7. Instigated by diehard followers, about 500 "Falun Gong" practitioners from Tianjin, Hebei, Jilin, Liaoning, Heilongjiang came to Beijing, they made troubles in CCTV and tried to stop broadcasting of the program. They claimed that the broadcast would be the general mobilization of "Falun Gong" practitioners coming to Beijing and making troubles.

But now, the mouthpiece of Falun Gong condemned CBC for its canceling the program under pressure. I should remind ladies and gentlemen of Falun Gong that they should recall how they tried to stop the broadcast of programs before.

Five years later, Zhao Zhizhen, the former director of Wuhan TV, together with his wife, went to New Heaven, USA  to attend her daughter's graduation ceremony in Yale University. Mr. Zhao received the summon from an America court unexpectedly, because Falun Gong brought an criminal accusation against him since Wuhan TV produced a program entitled "The facts and truths of Li Hongzhi" under the leadership of Zhao, which was broadcasted in CCTV program "Light of Science". The Chinese victims who were accused by Falun Gong did turn their backs upon Falun Gong`s accusation, but Zhao, a scientific writer and a famous intellectual, responded the accusation instead. At last, Falun Gong was adjudged losing the lawsuit by the American court. And more people got to know "The facts and truths of Li Hongzhi", the television program annoyed Falun Gong organizations. According to statistics, from April 1998 to July 1999, there were more than ten media, including Shenyang Television Station, China Youth Daily, Cangzhou Daily of Hebei province were besieged by "Falun Gong" organizations because of broadcasting programs or publishing articles of exposing facts about "Falun Gong".

Except the Chinese media, Falun Gong never tolerated "offense" from the public either. The most noted case was about Mr. He Zuoxiu, the famous physical scientist who published an article entitled "I do not support youth to practice Qigong" in a popular science magazine. In the article, he expressed some disapproving opinions about "Falun Gong". Thus, from April 19 to 23, 1999, Falun Gong organization in Tianjin called in more than 6300 practitioners to illegally assemble before the university where the office of this science magazine located, and disturbed the routine education and research work of the university. Moreover, Falun Gong sent 1600 practitioners to make trouble in front of Tianjin government building for more than 5 days. And for a long time, Mr. He always received harassing and threatening calls from Falun Gong.

Besides, Falun Gong also harassed western media too. In September 2006, Kaiwind Net once published an article written by "Han Songling" (http://www.kaiwind.com/xlztjxz/200706/t39485.htm), in which the writer recalled a farce of Falun Gong after a reporter of BBC James Miles objectively reported the cult fact of Falun Gong. From the article we got to know that, in face of the objective report from the west mainstream media, Falun Gong wrote to the president of BBC, UK's ambassador in China and UK's prime minister respectively, asking BBC to apologize publicly. They even threatened the BBC reporter that criticizing Falun Gong was to "bring harm to the public interests of China society and seriously violate relative Chinese laws and regulations", "seriously violate Chinese 'General Principles of Civic Law'" and "destroy the social stability of China", and the report "is insulting the modernization construction of Chinese people", and "is unfriendly and irresponsible to Chinese people and Chinese government." After a BBC report on the group(Falun Gong), the reaction was "quite extraordinary," says correspondent James Miles, "more response than to any article I've ever written in my entire career."

The three letters of Falun Gong also showed its characteristics of calling white black and forging "evidence". In the letter to Mr. Blare, the prime minister of UK, Falun Gong said, "we think the report of BBC forged and distorted the facts, and it seriously violated relative laws of China and brought harms to the reputation and dignity of the Chinese civilian and the public benefits of Chinese society. It was unfriendly and irresponsible to Falun Gong practitioners, the Chinese people and Chinese government." The above words reflected the usual running off at the mouth style of Falun Gong. In fact, what law did BBC violate for disclosing the cult of Falun Gong? Did Falun Gong have the power to sentence others on behalf of Chinese court?

We also noticed that Falun Gong media, such as the Epoch Times, Renmin Bao (the name of this newspaper is an obvious imitation with the biggest paper of China, the People's Daily), and Minghui Net and so on only reported the natural and man-made disasters of China, and they even cursed the successful launch of Moon exploration satellite of China. If one just read the reports of Falun Gong, he would be convinced that China is a terrible and unenlightened country. And this is the press freedom of Falun Gong - the freedom of only reporting bad news of China and good news of Falun Gong, and not reporting good news of China and bad news of Falun Gong.
